Mommy Makeover

Mommy Makeover Denver

Do you find yourself wishing you had your pre-child birth body back? Moms love their kids, but they don’t necessarily like the effects that pregnancy, childbirth and breast-feeding have had on their bodies. Pregnancy frequently takes a cruel toll on a woman’s body. To a greater or lesser degree, there are unwelcome changes to their bellies and the breasts. Women often find it challenging if not impossible to get their pre-pregnancy body back with just diet and exercise. Thankfully, women can still look and feel young through a transformation known as a Mommy Makeover. Denver, Colorado plastic surgeon, Dr. John Squires offers the Mommy Makeover surgery for moms who desire a tighter, slimmer, more appealing figure. This procedure combines multiple fat removal, skin lifting and tightening techniques that essentially "corrects" the physical effects of childbearing. Many of my plastic surgery patients in Denver are moms seeking to restore their bodies to a more youthful, pre-childbearing appearance. Dr. Squires tailors the surgical plan for each patient to produce the results they want.

Abdominal and breast changes:

Pregnancy causes abdominal wall stretching which results in excess skin and possible lower abdominal stretch marks and abdominal muscle bulging. There can also be a separation of the rectus abdominus muscles, (sit-up muscles), which is called diastasis. No amount of working out can improve these problems. Excess skin, lax muscle and diastasis can only be corrected with surgery.

Similarly, after pregnancy women will frequently develop engorgement of the breasts with significantly increased volume. After breast feeding the breasts will shrink and/or droop to a variable degree. This process leads to a deflated appearance, sometimes with a significant degree of droop and stretch marks. As with the abdominal changes, these changes do not respond to exercise, but can only be improved with surgery.

Surgical options:

Mommy makeover is a term that does not refer to a specific operation, but rather to a group of possible procedures that may be performed during a single operation to correct post pregnancy abdominal deformities as well as breast changes. Liposuction is also frequently added.

Tummy tuck:

Most of my patients that undergo a mommy makeover will have an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) procedure. This will remove excess lower abdominal skin and stretch marks, smooth the abdominal skin, and tighten the bulging abdominal muscle and correct a diastasis if present. Occasionally, liposuction alone will sufficiently improve the appearance of the abdomen, but usually muscle tightening is necessary. There are different varieties of abdominoplasty (mini, modified and standard) depending on how much loose skin there is.

In a mini abdominoplasty, a very short incision is confined to the upper pubic area. Through this incision the muscle can be tightened but no significant amount of skin can be removed. Most women after childbirth will have some excess skin and may not be good candidates for this procedure.

In a standard abdominoplasty, a low incision is made from hip to hip. There is also an incision around the umbilicus. This is the best procedure for significant tightening of skin and muscle. Excess fat is also removed during this procedure.

In modified abdominoplasty, the skin incision is longer than mini abdominoplasty but shorter than standard abdominoplasty. There is also no incision around the umbilicus. The muscle can be tightened but only a smaller amount of skin can be removed. This is generally a good procedure for women who have loose skin that is confined to just below the umbilicus.

Breast enhancement procedures:

There is a great deal of variability in the procedures offered to improve the breasts after childbirth. Some will achieve their desired result with a Breast Augmentation procedure. Some patients will require a breast lift to restore their breasts to a pre-pregnancy state. Many patients will require a lift with implants (augmentation mastopexy) to achieve a lifted, fuller breast appearance. Finally, some patients may want a breast reduction to achieve a more youthful, higher, tighter breast.

Many women also choose to add liposuction to enhance their results. Frequently with abdominoplasty, liposuction of the flanks is added to help contour the waist. Back rolls, saddlebags and inner thighs are frequently added. Liposuction alone is sometimes all that is needed, but most women after childbirth will also need abdominoplasty.

Brazilian butt lift or gluteal implants:

Many women after childbirth and as they age notice and lack of projection of the buttocks and wish to restore a more pleasing contour. Your own fat removed from other areas can be used to augment the buttocks and the so-called “Brazilian butt lift” also known as fat grafting of the buttocks. If there is not enough fat available, buttock implants can also be used.

What to expect:

All Mommy Makeover procedures are performed in an accredited surgery center under general anesthesia by board-certified anesthesiologists. Total surgical times for mommy makeover procedures typically range from two to five hours depending on the procedures being performed. Most of these procedures are performed on an outpatient basis; occasionally an overnight stay is needed for more extensive procedures. Typical recovery times are 2-10 days depending on the procedures performed. Generally, abdominoplasty requires the longer recovery times. Strenuous physical activity may be restricted for three to six weeks depending on the procedures planned.

With combined procedures, my Denver, Colorado mommy makeover patients can undergo one surgical procedure, with one recovery period to erase the undesirable effects of pregnancy and childbirth on their bodies. One surgery can restore their body to a pre-pregnancy state.

There are always risks to consider when contemplating surgery. Therefore, it is important to find an experienced cosmetic surgeon who is skilled in performing multiple procedures in one setting. Ultimately, a combination procedure can have numerous benefits, including only having to undergo surgery once — which means only one recovery and one fee.

In a perfect world, women would wait to have a mommy makeover until after all pregnancies have been completed so the surgical results are not compromised. Generally, any body part that has been lifted or tightened would be at risk for stretching out if a subsequent pregnancy were to occur.

If stretch marks exist on an area of the body (i.e. breast, tummy, etc.) that is going to be lifted and tightened, they may be removed when the excess skin is trimmed away. For any stretch marks left behind, as well as any other skin irregularities that may exist, there are skin-rejuvenating techniques that can help fade these imperfections.

Scarring will occur with almost any cosmetic procedure. However, every effort is made to place and close the incisions carefully so that scarring is minimized. Scarring eventually fades into faint lines and can be concealed by undergarments and bathing suits. Most patients feel that the physical results following a mommy makeover far outweigh the scarring left behind.
